Dominique Black, LCSW

Licensed Clinical Social Worker (VA, MD, WY) Board Approved Clinical Supervisor (VA & WY) Founder, Avenue Counseling

Experience and Professional Background

Dominique holds a Master of Social Work from Catholic University of America and is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. She is licensed to practice in Virginia, Maryland, and Wyoming, and is a Virginia Board of Social Work Approved Clinical Supervisor, with additional approval to provide clinical supervision in Wyoming.

In addition to her clinical work, Dominique has remained actively engaged in professional leadership and advocacy within the social work community. She currently serves as Secretary for the NASW–Virginia Chapter Board and as Chairperson of the Rappahannock Rapidan Local Human Rights Committee, where she works to support ethical practice, professional development, and access to quality behavioral health care within the community.

Through both her clinical and professional roles, Dominique remains committed to strengthening mental health services and supporting the development of future clinicians in the field.

Therapeutic Approach

Dominique’s work is grounded in evidence-based approaches, including Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and other skills-based therapies that support emotion regulation and healthy coping. Her approach focuses on helping clients better understand their emotional experiences while developing practical tools for navigating life’s challenges.

In therapy, Dominique works collaboratively with clients to explore patterns of thoughts, emotions, and behaviors while building strategies that support lasting change.

Dominique believes that meaningful progress often occurs when clients feel supported and challenged in the therapeutic process. She works to create a space where individuals feel comfortable exploring difficult experiences while developing the confidence and skills needed to navigate life with greater clarity and resilience.

Her goal is to provide a therapeutic environment that is supportive, structured, and empowering—one where clients can gain insight, develop practical coping strategies, and build lasting emotional well-being.

Clinical Supervision

In addition to providing therapy, Dominique offers clinical supervision for residents pursuing licensure. She is a Virginia Board of Social Work Approved Clinical Supervisor and is also approved to provide clinical supervision in Wyoming. Dominique is licensed as a clinical social worker in Virginia, Maryland, and Wyoming.

Her supervision approach emphasizes thoughtful case conceptualization, ethical decision-making, and the development of strong clinical judgment. Residents are encouraged to bring questions, challenges, and clinical experiences into supervision so they can be explored in a supportive and collaborative learning environment.

Supervision often focuses on strengthening clinical confidence while developing practical skills related to treatment planning, documentation, and working with complex cases. Dominique’s goal is to support emerging clinicians as they grow into confident, reflective practitioners equipped to provide ethical and effective care.
